It seems that it's another permission that is turned off by default. I wasn't aware as some other permission allows me to change my own default groups and I assumed it was applied to the permissions I copied. It should work now.

Fixed the PM thing. It was double-layered. I had fixed the premissions but there's a specific "group is allowed to receive PMs" setting on top of that, which is now enabled.

Note that non-members can PM the whole group as well if they have the permission that allows them to PM all groups. This ...

I'm not forcing any changes on anyone's default group. If you want to use it as your default group you can set that in your own user control panels in the top left menu.
