i do have a 9600.
maybe its different because its in a notebook.
but until now every 9600/9700 card i tried worked fine with free drivers.

i would recommend to use the Free Drivers included in xorg instead of the fglrx ones.

i do have the same video card in my notebook and i do get more than 2600 FPS with glxgears and free drivers.
and i use a screen resolution of 1400*1050 with 24bit.
